Goal 5

Today I met with Ming and we discussed conducting effective research, as well as how PR practices differ among the US and China.  When practicing PR in China foreign executives should be aware that engagement in China is much more complex than in many other countries.  Government and Public Relations are intertwined in China.  Most everything is government controlled so foreign and native people must constantly be in dealings with government controlled communications channels.  Ming did explain that there is not much freedom from government control in China.

Companies in China typically use communications strategies such as marketing products or promoting corporate social responsibility.  They use these techniques in attempts to buy or support products or services.  They strongly use the internet and technology, even more then we do here.  It internet community is one of the most rapidly growing in the world.  In the U.S we use the internet more for practical needs sending emails, buying/selling goods, conducting research, etc.  In China they use it more for social reasons with extensive use in blogging, chat rooms, and entertainment sites.  Ming said that they use the internet a lot in China and the younger population is almost constantly logged on.

Ming explained that the most common hangout for him and his friends is the mall.  They do not do many things outdoors but his favorite hobby is karaoke.  I feel that in the United States even though we are considered lazy, we are much more active.  My friends and I do activities outdoors whenever we get the chance.  Young adults in China seem to enjoy staying indoors more and making use of the vast array of technology they are offered.

A common product we discussed that is very popular in both countries is the iPhone.  I decided to use this product as an example because Ming and I both had an iPhone.  The product is basically advertised the same in both countries.  Heavy emphasis on graphics and media design is apparent in both countries as well as limited verbal appeal.  We noticed that there is never much talking in iPhone commercials it is much more visual.

One response to “Goal 5

  1. I think that the world as a whole is too connected with their technology. It’s almost sad to see the younger population be so attached to their phones, iPads, etc. I can understand why the young adults in China would like to get use out of all the technology that is offered to them, but not at the expense of enjoying activities outside. I think you and your partner did a good job explaining that, Good post!
